WWJD? What would Jesus do? It’s a phrase I think is tossed around a bit too liberally these days. We SHOULD ask yourselves what would Jesus do, but before doing that, we should first KNOW what Jesus did, said and taught!
Jesus never once backed down when faced with public scrutiny. He didn’t condone a sin because it had become accepted by the majority. He never said “It’s ok, they do it in California”. (”Believe it or not, I was told that by an elder of a church that offered the position of senior pastor to a man who was living with a woman who was not his wife”)
What Jesus did teach though, was that we should love all people because ALL are made in the image of His Father God. Let us not confuse this with accepting all actions of people. To illustrate this, recall the story of the woman at the well. In His day, it would have been unheard of for a Jew to speak to Samaritan woman. However, He did–and he delivered the plan of salvation to her. While talking to her though, He unashamedly addressed her sin. Speaking of her not having a husband, He pointed out that she did not have a husband, but that she’d had 5 husbands and was living with a man who was not her husband.
So, when we ask “What would Jesus do?”, this is the example we must use.
